new digital technologies, the languages which humans invented over the
past few centuries for representing different aspects of reality are
finally merging. Film is no longer distinct from print, books can include
film, sound, and links to supporting websites, and publishing is theoretically
instantaneous. This process of synthesis is often referred to as multimedia
or new media, although it's detractors refer to is as
unimedia. It is this process of convergence which I will
focus on in this lecture.
